We've been so busy with the holidays (more than twenty people joined us for Hoppin' John on New Year's day) that I've neglected to report some of Ruth Anne's most recent developments. One of them is that she's decided it's time to practice climbing stairs. Each flight makes a U-turn and they're steep and wooden with sandpaper strips for traction. Even Soca took several days to get used to them. Nevertheless Ruth Anne has started to streak for the stairs any time we may forget to close the bottom gate (of course we come running anytime she either makes a gleeful sound or gets too quiet). She also gives her sign for "downstairs" when she's on the first floor and wants to make an ascent. She the insists that the gate closes behind her and tries to get one of us to hold her hands rather than just letting us spot her. This way she can walk up instead of relying on the three point hold.
She's doing more and more "reading" (ie - associating a nursery rhyme with the pictures on that page and starting the pease porridge clapping or the itsy-bitsy spider motions accordingly). The other day she was looking at on of our favorite books Hug in which a little gorilla walk through the jungle seeing all the animals cuddling their babies and demanding a hug of his own. The only word (oft repeated) is "hug", except for the page where he and his mother find each other. On this page Ruth Anne remembered the dialogue: "Bobo!" - "Mommy!" She's also taken to rehearsing our version of this exchange. "Mama, mama" she cries and then reminds me of my line "Girl!"
