Women Warriors

One of the most striking sights in Ashgabat are the "street ninjas." The women in long dresses, orange vests and full-veils who swoop in with their handmade, waist-height brooms to sweep up the glass around car accidents and the desert sands between the five Turkmen lanes on a road divided by two dotted lines. Yet this is a difficult image to capture with a camera. Who is dumb enough to cause another accident by stopping to capture these ladies at work or bold enough to just start taking a woman's picture while she's dusty, hot, and working?

Sunday when we were out on the health walk, several street sweepers stopped us, because they wanted to take a picture with Tiffany who is posted here with Air Force. While it's annoying for Tiffany that being black means people think of her image as exotic, the group photo made me feel better about getting some pictures of the street-sweepers. Ruth Anne was a good sport, too.
