On Saturday we took our first day trip with some other Embassy families. We went to a region about an hour and a half east of Ashgabat to look at the ruins of an ancient city and a mausoleum. There were many chards of pottery dating from different periods. The area was inhabited 5000 years before Christ and there was a beautiful mosque still standing until about fifty years ago when Soviet soldiers dismantled it to build border stations.
