Karen wanted to get a manger scene that Ruth Anne can play with. We managed to order one and get it here in time for the 1st Sunday of Advent (November 30 this year, for those keeping track). We've split up the figures that go into it, so that each week we'll add to the scene. To help teach Ruth Anne about Christmas, I'm trying to read her something short each week as we add to the scene. The first week is just the stable, and here's what we came up with:
Long ago in Bethlehem, something special was happening. The ruler, Caesar, wanted to know how many people lived in the area of Israel. He told everyone to go to their home town so they could be counted. Mary and Joseph, Jesus' parents, had to go from Nazareth to Bethlehem, Joseph's home town. Right now, the stable is empty because people are just arriving—the town isn't full yet, but it will be.
We've started Advent, the season of waiting for Jesus' birthday. The empty stable reminds us to be patient, but that something special will happen soon.
OK, so it won't win me any awards for brilliant, scintillating writing, but I think it gets the point across. We'll post each week as we add, mainly because I'm still working on it.
